In the words of the celebrated theatre director Bibhas Chakraborty, the very scope of Bengali theatre has narrowed down. The essential concerns involving theatre activity have shifted owing to a system driven by market economy. Consequently, the scope to try new things is limited along with a lack of courage to take the risk involved! Hence, it’s quite clear why Bengali theatre is suffering from a dull and monotonous stasis. Furthermore he points out the catch-22 of Government grants. It may seem that the money is like a lifeline to the art form, but the compulsions and criteria associated with it often have adverse effects.
