Kalikaprasad delineates so-called mainstream as an urban concept

Posted by Kaahon Desk On January 31, 2015

Talking about prevalent and popular forms versus folk music, Kalikaprasad feels that the broad idea of mainstream and the logic of market economy don’t always work. He has strong doubts about the very concept of mainstream itself. He considers it to be a highly niche and urban concept. It hardly takes into account even the instances of commercial successes from the subaltern areas. He describes this as a socio-historical factor as our entire notion of urban modernity is based on a colonial model. As a result, a somewhat baseless idea of mainstream is glorified while the cultural identities lying on the periphery are hardly taken into account resulting in gross misconceptions.
