Secret of Dhak playing is hidden in its construction

Posted by Kaahon Desk On August 15, 2014

A Dhak is a familiar instrument in folk music festivals and religious celebrations in Bengal. One of the Dhakis or a Dhak playing professional from the village of Pranballabhpur, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, talks about the construction of a Dhak in detail. He points out the multiple nuances and various consequences of using different qualities of wood and skin. The skin usually comes from a goat or cow. But being a man of faith, he strongly believes that using the skin of a goat that has been sacrificed to God creates the sweetest music as it is blessed.
